Osteo-arthritis is inflammation of the joint. We know of over a hundred causes for the inflammation of the joint. Many are due to injury, infection, autoimmune disorders, due to accumulation of crystals in the joint etc. Osteoarthritis or Degenerative arthritis is the commonest form of arthritis where we have not been able to find a cause. Since it happens most often in the elderly we feel that in some way it is due to the aging process and or an accumulation of injury over the years.
Ageing and high blood pressure is a common health issue with many misconceptions. There are many controversies surrounding this topic and considerable difference of opinion regarding the diagnosis and treatment of this disorder.

A physiotherapy workshop was organized at our Great Times Club for seniors last week. The workshop started with demonstration of chair exercises which can be easily done by seniors sitting on a chair. Our physiotherapy team of Dr. Lamba and Dr. Vivek talked about the importance of walking, swimming and exercises to stay fit and lead a healthy life.
In India approximately 7 crore people suffer from diabetes, as a country we are the second most diabetic country in the word. Therefore it was not a surprise when Dr. Satish Chawla suggested that he would like to do a talk on Diabetes and related ailments for our members. It was a simple and informative discussion explaining the symptoms, criteria and complications of diabetes. He recommended a diabetic diet and the importance of calorie intake in controlling diabetes.
We’ve all heard the old saying “Health is Wealth”. In our daily diet we take a mix of vegetables, fruits, nuts, milk products and so on. But more often than not, we don’t consciously balance the type of food we consume and its quantity and nutritional value. Our body needs specific quantities of proteins, carbohydrates and micro nutrients i.e. vitamins and minerals, to remain healthy.

In the series of regular monthly Doctor’s Visit & Talks, a very informative talk on Cataract & Diabetes, was held at our centre last week by Dr. Parul Sharma from Max Hospital, Gurgaon.
The doctor talked about Cataract, Glaucoma, Diabetic Retinopathy, Night Blindness and covered various important issues related to eye health. She stressed upon the importance of vitals like Blood Pressure and Sugar and their impact on eye diseases.
A Workshop on Healthy Ageing was held on 8th May at Samvedna Senior Citizens’ Activity Center, Sector-57, Sushant Lok Ph III, Gurgaon. The Workshop was conducted by Dr. Harshbir Rana, PhD. in Social Gerontology from Delhi University who has worked on the socio-cultural and psychological aspects of ageing.
