India’s 70th Independence Day was celebrated with great enthusiasm at Samvedna Senior Care Foundation’s Senior Centre in Gurgaon. Members and staff were dressed in national flag colours and it was a pleasant mix of orange, white and green signifying peace, valour and prosperity. Members shared their most memorable independence day from their past. While some of them had painful memories of the partition there were others who recalled the excitement of the day, they had experienced as young citizens of a new India in 1947. It was interesting to note that many of our members were born post-independence !
As society has changed and evolved, so have the family ties changed over time. All families are different, and therefore different families interact in different ways. Some families are close-knit, and have frequent contact with each other and give importance to providing care as it becomes necessary for aging loved ones. Other families may feel simply an obligatory sense of duty when it comes to caring for each other, but may not share the same emotional bond.
Technology has become an essential part of our lives. We have become dependent on various gadgets to make our life easier. This was not always the case, earlier people were more dependent on each other to complete tasks. One important gadget which has taken an important role in our life is our “smartphone”, be it for calling, chatting, shopping, monetary transactions or any other thing – our smartphone manages all.
Simplifying yourself and your life is always a positive step ahead and it is never too late for it. It not only means simplifying it emotionally and psychologically, but also de-cluttering our surroundings and environment. This is specially important when we have elders around. Here are some points why it is healthier for us to own fewer material things in the golden years.
Losing a spouse is one of the most painful experiences one can go through. You may feel completely numb, or in shock; the world may pause around you. Losing a loved one changes your entire life, especially when the loved one was also your best friend. You may feel lost and stuck, uncomfortable making even the most minor of decisions. But your life does not stop there; many things have to be handled and closed which the surviving spouse may find overwhelming.
Samvedna Senior Care turned 3 on 6th November! To celebrate this joyous day we had a get together at our senior club – Great Times by Samvedna. Our guests, apart from our valued members, included a team from the Cherie Blair Foundation. Our founder Archana, who was earlier associated with their women entrepreneurs programme, invited them to the club so they could learn more about our work and also get a chance to meet our members.
Years back my parents shifted to Mumbai for making a living. Now after working for many years, they decided to come back to their roots and shift their base to Gurgaon, our hometown, where I live at present, with my wife and children. Though it was difficult to move back from a place they made their own, they were looking forward to a new phase of being closer to their children and grandchildren. Even we were looking forward to this, as our children as well would get to see a new side of life.
One of the objectives of our senior club is for our members to share their skill and experiences with others, and thereby create a platform for collaboration and sharing and enjoying company of like-minded people. As a part of this initiative our member Mrs. Indira Mishra, a renowned Ikebana expert, conducted a workshop around this unique art form for both members and non-members at our club.
How rightly this line summarizes what life holds for us. Each transition in life has certain pros and cons, bringing with it new adjustments. The same holds true for those individuals who are now progressing towards old age. While going through this transitory phase, there are a gamut of changes that come along, together with declining physical health adding to stress. At this stage people often have questions about their purpose and meaning of life.
Social interaction is one of the most important needs of human life. Man is a social animal and we all need to be socially active and have meaningful engagement. The joint family system gives people the opportunity to meet their socialization needs within the family. But now slowly the joint family system is reducing in India and more more eople have started living in a nuclear family.
