Years back my parents shifted to Mumbai for making a living. Now after working for many years, they decided to come back to their roots and shift their base to Gurgaon, our hometown, where I live at present, with my wife and children. Though it was difficult to move back from a place they made their own, they were looking forward to a new phase of being closer to their children and grandchildren. Even we were looking forward to this, as our children as well would get to see a new side of life.
One of the objectives of our senior club is for our members to share their skill and experiences with others, and thereby create a platform for collaboration and sharing and enjoying company of like-minded people. As a part of this initiative our member Mrs. Indira Mishra, a renowned Ikebana expert, conducted a workshop around this unique art form for both members and non-members at our club.
How rightly this line summarizes what life holds for us. Each transition in life has certain pros and cons, bringing with it new adjustments. The same holds true for those individuals who are now progressing towards old age. While going through this transitory phase, there are a gamut of changes that come along, together with declining physical health adding to stress. At this stage people often have questions about their purpose and meaning of life.
Social interaction is one of the most important needs of human life. Man is a social animal and we all need to be socially active and have meaningful engagement. The joint family system gives people the opportunity to meet their socialization needs within the family. But now slowly the joint family system is reducing in India and more more eople have started living in a nuclear family.
Ageing is not necessarily about slowly growing old and frail. It need not decrease a person’s ability to contribute to the society. Older people can contribute a lot more towards the society considering the experiences and learnings they have had. But this can only be possible only when they are active and healthy. Active ageing is about optimizing opportunities to enhance the quality of life as people grow old.

This August, India entered its 71st year of independence. It’s the day when we remember the martyrs who gave their lives fighting for our freedom. Sharing the essence and true spirit of being proud Indians, we at Great Times Club by Samvedna organized a small function celebrating this great occasion. We asked our members to write their wish for India this year. We came across a lot of captivating messages from our members.
Exercise in any form is great for a person, and dance is no exception. Through dance we experience freedom of emotion. Be it joy, remorse, contentment, anger or sadness, dance can be used to convey each of these expressions. It is a way to express the latent thoughts and feelings one has. It is also known to increase self-confidence and self-esteem. At a physiological level, is great for developing muscle strength, body coordination, enhancing balance and also for knowing one’s body in space. The best part about dancing is that it is never restricted by age! It is an art form that can be engaged by anyone and everyone. Believing in this mantra and the countless advantages it has, we organized a dance workshop conducted by a talented and enthusiastic dance instructor Mrs. Neera Anand.
We all look forward to enjoying and relaxing in our time off, away from the heat and chaotic lives in the cities. For children and their parents it is a break from their occupation and daily living demands. For a senior citizen it is no different. Travelling as a family is a great way to reconnect and spend quality time with loved ones, who otherwise are busy.
